Artificial Sweetener & Joint Pain. If you have arthritis, you're well aware of the pain, inflammation and swelling it causes in your joints. Pain- reducing medication is the primary method of treating arthritis. In addition, making changes to your diet to avoid inflammatory foods in favor of foods that reduce inflammation may help ease your symptoms. In some people with arthritis, artificial sweeteners may be a culprit that requires avoiding. No reports exist of artificial sweeteners causing joint pain in healthy individuals. Because a diet rich in sugar can aggravate arthritis, experts often advise people who have this condition to reduce their sugar intake. This may lead you to consume foods with artificial sweeteners used as sugar substitutes. Like many people with arthritis joint pain, you may have considered taking vitamins and supplements that promise to ease joint pain. And it's true -- the right ones. If you're sensitive to these substances, your immune system may react, triggering an inflammatory response, according to the Arthritis Foundation. The resulting inflammatory response may aggravate arthritis symptoms like joint pain and swelling. If you suspect artificial sweeteners are triggering pain in your joints, try eliminating them for a few weeks to see if your symptoms ease up. Read food labels carefully, because artificial sweeteners occur in many foods - - even in items that you may least expect. You're likely familiar with the brand names for the typical artificial sweeteners, but manufacturers often list them under a generic name on labels. Saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame- K, also listed as ace- K, sucralose and neotame are common artificial sweeteners you may find in the ingredient list. People with arthritis should try to reduce their sugar intake. If you're sensitive to artificial sweeteners, try other alternatives. Stevia is a natural sweetener made from the stevia plant. It gets its sweetness from substances called steviol glycosides, contains zero calories and doesn't raise blood sugar. Yacon syrup is a low- calorie natural sweetener that comes from the yacon tuber. It doesn't raise blood sugar and may actually help manage weight. Researchers found daily yacon syrup consumption resulted in a significant decrease in weight and BMI, according to a study published in the April 2. These are typically foods that help fight inflammation. Tart cherries contain a phytochemical called anthocyanin that may help ease arthritis symptoms. Fish oil also has anti- inflammatory properties, so incorporate fatty fish like mackerel and salmon into your meal plan a couple of times a week. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts are packed with phytochemicals and may also support joint health. Learn how to live without this debilitating disease! People in non-western cultures who eat diets low in animal fat and protein have much lower incidences of all.Gluten- Free Diets and Joint Pain . But what if you have arthritis? Will a gluten- free diet help? Doctors are still debating this point, but some experts say it might. Like many types of arthritis, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. With these disorders, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue instead of viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. In people who have CD, gluten – a complex of proteins found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye – triggers a powerful autoimmune response that damages the small intestine and affects its ability to absorb nutrients. This can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating. This is partly due to inflammation and partly due to poor absorption of vital nutrients. Getting a CD Diagnosis. Celiac disease is diagnosed with a blood test that looks for antibodies to gluten. Antibodies are protein produced by the body's immune system when it detects harmful substances. If the test is positive, it's followed by an endoscopic biopsy to check for small intestine damage. Murray, MD, who directs the Celiac Disease Program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Minnesota. CD damages villi – finger- like protrusions that aid in the absorption of nutrients from the small intestine – and prevents them from doing their job. Although awareness of CD has never been greater, it remains underdiagnosed. One reason is that CD symptoms are subtle and can look like many other things, from irritable bowel syndrome and migraines to arthritis. Another is that a growing number of people with CD don't experience classic gut problems, and a few with severe intestinal damage have no clinical symptoms at all. These days, it can take five to seven years for some patients with celiac disease to be diagnosed – down from an average of 1. Dr. Murray says rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders are red flags that should alert doctors to test for CD because having one autoimmune disease increases the likelihood of having another. A few studies have shown that people with Sjogrens syndrome, psoriatic arthritis and lupus may also have an increased likelihood of having celiac disease. Murray encourages people with autoimmune conditions to talk to their doctor about being screened for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Gluten Sensitivity: Fact or Fad? Less is known about gluten sensitivity. According to Rochelle Rosian, MD, a rheumatologist at Cleveland Clinic, people who are gluten sensitive have a different type of immune response to grain proteins. They don't develop antibodies to gluten or have small intestine damage, but they do have CD symptoms, especially outside the gut. There is no test for gluten sensitivity, which has created skepticism among some doctors. Rosian, inflammation outside the gut is especially likely to affect the joints. She adds that many of her RA patients who are sensitive to gluten notice less joint pain when they don't eat it. When some, but not all, people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity eliminate these from their diet, they find their arthritis improves. No Pain? Medical experts caution that it's important not to try a gluten- free diet for arthritis before testing for celiac disease because the test won't be accurate.
And sometimes the problem isn't gluten. These can be pro- inflammatory and irritate the gut lining. Rosian says. For people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, however, a gluten- free diet isn't a fad – it's medicine. Going Gluten- free. The only treatment for diagnosed CD and gluten sensitivity is a gluten- free diet. Many people, including those with gluten- related joint pain, may notice improved symptoms within weeks. For others, it may take longer, and some may never find relief. But experts say it's definitely worth talking to your doctor about being screened for CD if you have RA, type 1 diabetes or any other autoimmune disorder. Dr. Murray, coauthor of the American College of Gastroenterology’s guidelines on the diagnosis of celiac disease, encourages people with autoimmune conditions to talk to their doctor about being screened for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Patients must be heeding Dr. Murray’s advice and physicians must be heeding the advice in the guidelines, because experts at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University in New York City say most of their referrals come from rheumatologists and endocrinologists. NOTE: A landmark clinical trial (ALLHAT) compared doxazosin to chlorthalidone in the treatment of high- risk hypertensive patients. In this study, only the diuretic significantly reduced the risk of combined cardiovascular disease events, especially heart failure; doxazosin did not. These results led to discontinuation of the doxazosin treatment arm of the study. NOTE: Doxazosin extended- release tablets are not FDA- approved for the treatment of hypertension. Oral dosage (immediate- release tablets)Adults Initially, 1 mg PO once daily at bedtime. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. Dosage may be increased every several days as necessary depending on the patients standing blood pressure response, however, the long half- life of doxazosin should be considered when titrating the dosage. Maximum daily dose is 1. Geriatric See adult dosage. Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the hypotensive effects of doxazosin. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. For the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). For treatment of BPH in combination with finasteride. Oral dosage. Adult males The role of doxazosin for this purpose has not been established. Information about the drug doxazosin mesylate (Cardura, Cardura XL), a medication prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), and enlarged. Initially, 1 mg PO once daily at bedtime; adjust based on response, up to 8 mg PO once daily at bedtime. In a long- term, double- blind clinical trial of 3,0. BPH, combination therapy of doxazosin (4 to 8 mg/day PO) and finasteride (5 mg/day PO) was shown to significantly reduce the risk of overall clinical progression of BPH than either drug alone. However, based on a study of finasteride alone, more data are needed to confirm that finasteride has positive overall effects in delaying or reducing the incidence of prostate cancer. Geriatric males See adult dosage. Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the hypotensive effects of doxazosin. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. Oral dosage (immediate- release tablets)Adult males Initially, 1 mg PO once daily at bedtime. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. Dosage may be increased up to 8 mg PO once daily at bedtime. Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the hypotensive effects of doxazosin. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. Oral dosage (extended- release tablets, Cardura XL)Adult males Initially, 4 mg PO once daily, taken with breakfast. Adjust dosage in 3 to 4 weeks based on clinical response. Dosage may be increased up to 8 mg PO once daily. If therapy is interrupted for several days, initiate dosage at the starting dose of 4 mg PO once daily. If switching from immediate- release doxazosin tablets, initiate dosage with the extended- release tablets at the starting dose of 4 mg PO once daily. Prior to starting therapy with the extended- release tablets, the final evening dose of the immediate- release tablets should not be taken. Geriatric males See adult dosage. Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the hypotensive effects of doxazosin. Adjust dosage based on clinical response. MAXIMUM DOSAGEAdults. Safety and efficacy have not been established. Children. Safety and efficacy have not been established. DOSING CONSIDERATIONSHepatic Impairment. No specific recommendations are available for hepatic disease. Since doxazosin is extensively metabolized, it is prudent to start with the lowest initial adult dosage (1 mg PO once daily in the morning or at bedtime). Adjust dosage based on response. Renal Impairment. No dosage adjustment is needed. Intermittent hemodialysis. No dosage adjustment is needed; doxazosin is highly protein bound and is not removed during hemodialysis. ADMINISTRATIONOral Administration. Observe for postural hypotension, particularly with first dose. Oral Solid Formulations. Immediate- release tablets: May be administered orally without regard to meals. Extended- release tablets (Cardura XL): Administer once daily with breakfast. Doxazosin is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to doxazosin, other quinazolines (e. Hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, syncope Doxazosin must be used with caution, especially with initial dosing, as hypotension may occur. Blood pressure should be monitored for 2 to 6 hours following the first dose (e. Dosages should be adjusted as necessary depending on patient tolerance as evidenced by standing blood pressure. Doxazosin should not be administered to any patient who has existing hypotension (including orthostatic hypotension or syncope). Hepatic disease. Doxazosin should be used with caution in patients with hepatic disease because the drug is primarily metabolized by the liver. Exaggerated effects could occur after normal doses of drug in these patients. Pregnancy There are insufficient data regarding the use of doxazosin in pregnant women to determine if a drug- associated risk for major birth defects and miscarriage exists. However, untreated hypertension during pregnancy can result in increased maternal risks including pre- eclampsia, gestational diabetes, premature delivery, and delivery complications. Hypertension also increases the risk for fetal intrauterine growth restriction and intrauterine death. In animal reproduction studies, no adverse developmental effects were observed when doxazosin was orally administered at doses 4 to 1. AUC exposures. Breast- feeding There are no data regarding the effects of doxazosin on the breast- fed infant or on milk production. Although the data are insufficient to confirm the presence of doxazosin in human milk, a single case study involving a breast- feeding mother receiving doxazosin reports an infant exposure of doxazosin of < 1% of the maternal weight- adjusted dosage and a milk: plasma ratio of 0. Ocular surgery. Patients receiving or who have previously received treatment with doxazosin or other alpha- 1 blockers may be at risk for intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during ocular surgery for cataracts. Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome is a small pupil syndrome variant that is characterized by a flaccid iris that billows in response to intraoperative irrigation currents, progressive intraoperative miosis despite preoperative dilation with standard mydriatic drugs, and potential prolapse of the iris toward the phacoemulsification incisions. There does not appear to be a benefit of stopping alpha- 1 blocker therapy prior to cataract surgery, but ophthalmologists should be prepared for possible modifications to their surgical technique such as the use of iris hooks, iris dilator rings, or viscoelastic substances. Priapism Rarely, doxazosin, like other alpha adrenergic antagonists, has been associated with priapism (persistent painful penile erection unrelated to sexual activity). Priapism, if not treated promptly, can result in irreversible damage to the erectile tissue. Patients who have an erection lasting greater than 4 hours, whether painful or not, should seek emergency medical attention. Geriatric Insufficient data are available from hypertension clinical trials to determine a difference between the effects of doxazosin in geriatric vs. Geriatric patients may be more likely to be susceptible to hypotensive effects at the usual adult dosage, particularly with initial dosing or an increase in dose, when postural hypotensive effects and orthostasis are more likely to occur (e. The safety and effectiveness profile of doxazosin for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) was similar in older male patients 6. According to the Beers Criteria, doxazosin is considered a potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) for use in geriatric patients and is not recommended as routine treatment of hypertension in this population due to the high risk of orthostatic hypotension and the availability of alternative agents with a superior benefit to risk profile. In addition, the Beers expert panel recommends avoiding doxazosin in geriatric patients with syncope due to an increased risk of orthostatic hypotension or bradycardia, and also avoiding doxazosin in geriatric females with urinary incontinence, regardless of cause or type, because aggravation of incontinence may occur. The federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) regulates medication use in residents of long- term care facilities (LTCFs). According to the OBRA guidelines, antihypertensive regimens should be individualized to achieve the desired outcome while minimizing adverse effects. Antihypertensives may cause dizziness, postural hypotension, fatigue, and there is an increased risk for falls. Doxazosin can cause significant hypotension and syncope during the first few doses; therefore, the dose should be administered at bedtime initially, and the drug slowly titrated as needed. There are many drug interactions that can potentiate the effects of antihypertensives. Some agents require a gradual taper to avoid adverse consequences caused by abrupt discontinuation. In addition, when doxazosin is infrequently used as a treatment for urinary incontinence, assessment of the underlying causes and identification of the type/category of urinary incontinence needs to be documented prior to or soon after the time of initiating treatment. These medications have specific and limited indications based on the cause and categorization of incontinence. Patients should be assessed periodically for medication effects on urinary incontinence as well as lower urinary tract symptoms and treatment tolerability. We baby- proof our cabinets, keep our first aid kit well stocked and make choices to create a safe environment for ourselves and children every day. Yet when you have a fluffy fur- baby in your home, you need to be aware of what dangers lurk around your house for them as well. It’s important to be familiar with the most common pet hazards and injuries and have a pet first aid plan for how to treat them, to help your pet live a long and healthy life. Fluffy ate what? The risk of your pet eating a foreign object, like toys, shoes, or even furniture is not only annoying but a tremendous health risk. In fact, intestinal problems from ingesting a foreign object is one of the top claims received by pet insurance companies every year. Dogs are likely to eat toys, clothing, even rocks, while cats are at bigger risk for ingesting string and ribbon. While some objects are able to be passed, only a vet can be sure and can tell you what medical treatment, if any, is needed. Great post as always, thanks. However, I do think you might have overlooked one critical aspect of diet. The conversion of fructose to. Is it poisonous? It’s simple common sense that if your dog or cat eats medication meant for humans or ingests any common household cleaner, they are at serious risk of being poisoned. Yet, what many pet owners don’t know is that not only are many popular backyard plants potentially life threatening but foods like grapes, onions, chocolate and gum can be highly toxic to your cat or dog. There are several paleo pizza crust recipes out in the blogosphere these days. The recipe I am sharing today is the result of the desire for a nut-free, dairy-free.If your pet shows symptoms like vomiting, lethargy or disorientation, or you suspect they ate something poisonous call poison control and your vet immediately. Do not try to make your pet vomit, because you might be doing more harm than good. Once bitten.. Bites from other animals is another very common pet injury. Larger dogs tend to have more visible physical wounds while small dogs and cats can have broken bones or internal organ damage. If the wound is superficial you can wash away any debris and cover it with a clean bandage until you can have a vet look at it. Bites from cats can me more complicated. Their teeth create puncture wounds that can be hard to see and eventually become infected creating an abscess. If you find your pet has an abscess, be sure to have a vet check to see if your pet will need antibiotics and follow any instructions on keeping the wound clean. Watch the toes! For those of us who groom our pets at home, nail trimming is a delicate and nerve- wracking chore. It’s extremely important to make sure your pet’s nails do not get too long. Long toe nails get caught on carpets and blankets causing toe injuries, so you need to stay on top of the trimming. Long nails can also crack and at that point you need to take your dog or cat to the vet for medical attention. If you accidentally trim too short and your pet’s nail bleeds, dip your pet’s nail in cornstarch to help clotting and keep an eye on it. Do your best to keep your pet from licking the affected toe or nail. When things heat up. Every summer we hear the same warning NOT to leave your pet in your car. But your car isn’t the only place where your pet can become susceptible to heat stroke or dehydration. If your pet stays outdoors during the day, be sure to provide multiple shaded areas and large quantities of water. You should also avoid exercising your pet during peak hours. If you’re going to walk your dog, consider early morning or waiting until the evening. High temperatures not only carry a risk for heat stroke but many dogs suffer severe burns on the pads of their feet from hot sidewalks and roads. If your dog does seem overheated, like continual panting and lethargy, try to help them cool down by spritzing them with water and setting them near a fan. Of course, seek veterinary help any time you are concerned that your pet’s health may be in danger. Poisonous foods to avoid: Chocolate.

They are gluten- free, and require no specialty ingredients. The Perfect ketogenic wrap! I've been on a quest to find the best gluten- free low carb tortilla and low carb wrap recipes. It started last year when I developed a recipe for 1 carb tortillas using glucomannon (Konjac) powder and coconut flour. They're great to use in enchiladas or to fry as chalupa or tostada shells. Then, I posted one of my favorite recipes for low carb tortillas and wraps from Maria Emmerich of Maria Mind Body Health. Her recipe, which uses almond flour and psyllium powder, was my go- to for low carb wraps or soft tacos. This recipe has changed lives – for real. All of these recipes are great low carb options, but they require specialty ingredients. BUT THIS RECIPE!!!! This recipe is made from regular ingredients you can find in any store. And like I said, are made from regular ingredients, but what's even better is the fact that they are ALMOST ZERO CARB per each. And two wraps top out at 1 net carb! I know. You’re thinking I’m pulling your leg. Right now you’re probably thinking that this is just too good to be true. I bet you think I am full of baloney; that I just looked you straight in the eye and told you a “whopper”. These low carb wraps are 1. And, I am so excited! How can this be? How can these low carb wraps be almost zero carb? And pork rinds are a great low carb source of protein, contain heart healthy fats, and are full of gelatin. Almost Zero Carb Low Carb Wraps These amazing low carb, wraps have trace carbs per each and 1 net carb for two. They are gluten- free, and require no specialty ingredients. The Perfect ketogenic wrap! Food Processor Method: Place the pork rinds in a food processor and process until they become a fine powder. Add the baking soda and salt and give it a little pulse to mix. Add the eggs and cheese and process until smooth and thick. Add the water and blend until all of the ingredients are completely incorporated. Pour into a bowl and let sit for 5 minutes. Hand Mixer Method: Put the pork rinds into a large zip- loc bag and crush in batches with a rolling pin or the smooth side of a meat mallet. They should be completely pulverized into a powder. Place the pulverized pork rinds into a medium bowl and stir in the baking soda and salt. In a smaller bowl, blend the cream cheese with one egg until combined and smooth. Add another egg and mix. Add the egg and cheese mixture to the pork rind crumbs and add the rest of the eggs. Blend with the hand mixer until smooth. Add the water and mix until thoroughly combined. Let the batter sit for 5 minutes. Preheat a pancake griddle over medium heat. When hot, oil the griddle and then gently wipe- off the excess with a paper towel. Using a 1/4 cup measure, pour the batter onto the skillet and spread into a 5 inch circle with the back of a spoon. Make it as thin as possible. I dip my spoon in water to prevent it from sticking to the batter. Cook like you would a pancake. Make sure to spread the batter with a wet spoon or you will end up with a thick pancake that will not serve well as a wrap. Thin the batter with a little more water if you notice it getting a little too thick to spread easily.***If this recipe is too eggy for you the first time you make it, try using 3 whole eggs, 3 egg whites and 3 tablespoons of oil. No, this recipe can not be made without the pork rinds. That's like making a bread recipe and then removing the flour. Try these alternative wraps, zucchini tortillas, and this savory crepe recipe.
